● willémite nom féminin (du nom de Guillaume Ier [néerlandais Willem], roi de Hollande) Silicate naturel de zinc Zn2SiO4, rhomboédrique. (C'est un minerai de zinc.)

MINÉR. Silicate naturel de zinc, utilisé notamment pour les écrans de tubes cathodiques en raison de la fluorescence verte qu'il donne. La plus belle luminosité de teinte verte est obtenue avec la willemite, silicate de zinc cristallisé naturel. Cette matière peut servir pour l'observation des rayons (Mme P. CURIE, Isotopie, 1924, p. 73).
Prononc.:[vilemit]. Étymol. et Hist. 1832 willelmine (BEUDANT t. 2, p. 727); 1854 willémite (DAUBRÉE ds C.r. de l'Ac. des sc. t. 39, p. 137); 1872 willelmite (LITTRÉ). Nom donné à cette substance par A. Lévy en 1829 (d'apr. BEUDANT, loc. cit. et NED) en l'honneur de Guillaume Ier [1772-1843], roi des Pays-Bas de 1815 à 1840; de Wille(l)m, suff. -ine (-in) puis -ite. En angl., willemite est att. dep. 1850 (ds NED).
